Digital ID in Poland: mObywatel, e-dowód, Profil Zaufany
How to prove your identity online in Poland: mObywatel app, Profil Zaufany, e-dowód ID card, eIDAS levels and the mObywatel Europa wallet in October 2026.
CountriesPublished
In Poland you prove your identity online with the mObywatel app, with Profil Zaufany (the Trusted Profile), with a supported bank login, or with the e-dowód electronic ID card. Which one fits depends on the service, and several portals accept more than one. The EU wallet is being integrated into mObywatel and is not yet a finished public product as of October 2026.

The national system
Poland’s public electronic identification system rests on two eID means: Profil Zaufany, a free account for identification and signing in government services, and Profil Osobisty, which is tied to the e-dowód. The national login page lets you choose between Trusted Profile, the mObywatel app, online banking and the e-dowód, so a citizen without a card reader can still sign in. Levels of assurance, as in other countries, depend on how strongly the identity was checked; see levels of assurance.
How to get it and use it
Profil Zaufany can be confirmed in minutes through your bank, with an e-dowód and an NFC phone via the eDO App, or by video call. Confirmation by bank is the quickest route for most people. Login codes used to arrive by SMS and can now also be approved as a push notification in the mObywatel app.
mObywatel is a free app for iOS and Android that holds the mDowód, a mobile version of the ID card accepted by offices, medical facilities and hotels, as well as other documents, forms, payments and a qualified signature. A browser version exists as well. The same ministry runs the youth variant, mObywatel Junior.
The e-dowód has a contact chip and an NFC interface. It contains the authentication and signing functions and is protected by PINs. If you still hold an old plastic ID card, exchanging it is free, and the mObywatel app can be used to start the request.
The EU wallet in Poland (October 2026)
The Polish EU Digital Identity Wallet will not be a separate app but a new part of mObywatel, branded mObywatel Europa. The provider is the Central Informatics Centre. According to Polish reporting, a test environment opened on 16 September 2026 and private companies such as identity verification providers were among the first to register; the new app version is expected to debut as a pilot in December 2026. Poland has also taken part in the EU large-scale pilots POTENTIAL and APTITUDE.
Activation of the European features is expected to require an e-dowód, because EU rules ask for strong authentication when the wallet is issued. The wallet will support selective disclosure, for example proving you are an adult without revealing your name or ID number. Our EU Digital Identity Wallet guide covers what this means in general. Treat all dates here as plans and check the official mObywatel pages for changes.
Use abroad and by foreigners
Because Poland notified its system, services in other member states that are connected to the eIDAS network can in principle accept it, and a Polish government service reports being connected to the eIDAS node for eIDs from many other countries. Coverage still varies by service; our guide to cross-border eID explains what to check. Foreign residents with a Polish personal number can use Profil Zaufany and often a bank login; rules for other documents change, so confirm with the official portal. Next door, compare Germany, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Which method should you choose?
If you want the quickest start, create a Profil Zaufany through your bank, since that needs no card reader and usually takes minutes. If you use your phone for most things, the mObywatel app is the natural centre: it holds the mDowód, handles login and will carry the European wallet. The e-dowód is worth having even if you rarely use its online function, because the European features are expected to depend on it, and because it also works as a login on the government page via the eDO App. Keep more than one route active so that a lost phone or a bank problem does not lock you out, and remember that features and requirements are still being finalised for mObywatel Europa.
Privacy and security
Keep the e-dowód PINs private and avoid using them on shared computers. Only log in through the official government login page, since fake Profil Zaufany sites circulate. A push approval in mObywatel is generally safer than an SMS code, and your phone should have a screen lock. In the wallet, selective disclosure is meant to limit what a service learns about you.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between mObywatel and Profil Zaufany?
Profil Zaufany is a free government identification and signature account, confirmed for example through your bank, an e-dowód or a video call. mObywatel is the government app that holds digital documents such as the mDowód and can also be used to log in to many services. They overlap, and several portals accept both.
Do I need an e-dowód to use Polish government services online?
No. You can log in with Profil Zaufany, with bank login or with the mObywatel app. The e-dowód is an additional route, and it is expected to be required for the European wallet features.
Is the Polish EU wallet available yet?
Not as a general public product as of October 2026. A test environment for private entities opened in September 2026 and the mObywatel Europa pilot is planned around December 2026.
Can I use Polish eID in other EU countries?
Poland notified its public electronic identification system under eIDAS in 2023, so connected services in other member states can in principle accept it. Coverage depends on each service.
