How to prove your identity online in Slovakia: chip ID card, eIdentita and eDoklady apps, slovensko.sk, eIDAS high and EU wallet plans, October 2026.

CountriesPublished

In Slovakia you identify yourself online with your chip ID card on the national portal slovensko.sk, or with the eIdentita mobile app that you activate with the card over NFC. The Slovak EU wallet is being built on the existing eDoklady and eIdentita apps and is not confirmed as fully launched as of October 2026.

The national system

Slovakia’s electronic identity rests on the eID card, an identity card with a contact chip or a dual-interface chip, and on the central portal slovensko.sk. The Slovak Republic received eIDAS notification from 18 December 2020 for its eID and for the proof of residence of a foreigner, at the high level. That means holders of these documents can access electronic public services on connected portals in other member states, and holders of notified eIDs from other countries can log in to slovensko.sk. If you want to understand why high is the top tier, see levels of assurance.

How to get it and use it

The traditional route is the eID client software on a computer with a card reader and the card’s PIN. Since 15 April 2025, the Interior Ministry also offers the eIdentita app. You activate it with an identity card with a contact or dual-interface chip using NFC. The app includes a qualified electronic signature with timestamp, so you can sign documents with legal force from the phone without a card reader; see our guide to qualified electronic signatures. The companion app eDoklady keeps digital copies of your ID and driving licence. Early on these were mainly accepted in interactions with the police, and the ministry signed agreements with Slovak Post, the railway company and health insurers to widen use, so check what each organisation currently accepts. The ministry also reported that Slovak Post offices can verify identity using the app.

The EU wallet in Slovakia (October 2026)

Independent trackers in September 2026 describe the eDoklady and eIdentita apps as existing apps with a confirmed upgrade towards the EU wallet, with a national certification scheme for the Slovak wallet being defined. Official communication points to the electronic service being valid across the Union from 2027, because it follows the prescribed European rules. The legal deadline for member states to offer a certified wallet is the end of 2026. Because the sources differ on the exact launch date, treat any date as provisional and check the Interior Ministry. Our overview of the EU Digital Identity Wallet explains the scope.

Use abroad and by foreigners

Slovak eID holders can use their card or app on connected foreign portals, with coverage varying per service; see cross-border eID. Citizens of other member states with notified eIDs can log in to slovensko.sk. The notified scheme also covers the foreigner’s proof of residence. For neighbouring systems, compare the Czech Republic, Austria, Poland and Hungary.

Which method should you choose?

For occasional use, the eIdentita app is the lowest-friction route once it is activated with your card, and it also gives you a qualified signature on the phone. If you handle official matters on a laptop and want the traditional route, the eID client with a reader still works. The eDoklady app is a convenience for showing your ID or driving licence, but it does not replace carrying the physical documents everywhere yet, so check what the organisation in front of you accepts. Make sure your card is a version with the right chip type before you plan around NFC activation, and keep the PIN somewhere safe, since a forgotten PIN usually means a visit to a service point.

Privacy and security

Protect the card PIN and the app activation, never share a code, and use the official apps and portal only. Digital documents shown to private organisations should be limited to what is needed. The wallet is designed around selective disclosure so that you can prove a single attribute rather than your whole identity.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to log in to slovensko.sk?

An identity card with a contact chip or a dual-interface chip, together with the eID client software and a card reader or an NFC phone, or the eIdentita mobile app activated with that card. Check the portal for the supported methods.

What is the difference between eIdentita and eDoklady?

eIdentita is for proving who you are online and signing, activated with your ID card via NFC. eDoklady stores digital versions of your ID and driving licence on your phone. Both are run by the Interior Ministry.

Is the Slovak EU wallet available yet?

Not as a confirmed finished product as of October 2026. The existing eDoklady and eIdentita apps are being upgraded, and official communication points to EU-wide validity from 2027.

Can foreigners living in Slovakia use the Slovak eID?

The notified scheme includes the foreigner's proof of residence, so non-citizens residing in Slovakia can access electronic services in the same framework. Rules for obtaining the document are set by the Interior Ministry.
